Below are explanations of most of the techniques and methods used here at Standley Lake Massage Therapy, Inc.
Swedish Massage - the manipulation of soft tissue for therapeutic purposes and may include effleurage, petrissage, tapotement, compression, vibration and friction. It is a soothing massage that increases circulation to the muscles. It may also include the use of oil and hot or cold packs. Some of the benefits of Swedish massage are a state of being both relaxed and alert, relief from stress, faster recovery time from an injury, relief from tired, aching muscles and a greater sense of self-awareness.
Neuromuscular Therapy - concerned with bringing relief from soft tissue pain and dysfunction. The focus is to find the origin of the pain and address it. NMT renews structural homeostasis by restoring normal physiological functioning among muscles, nerves and the musculoskeletal system. NMT is very effective for breaking the chronic pain cycle.
Hot Stone Therapy - a profoundly relaxing session in which the therapist uses heated smooth stones and oil to soothe away stress.
Manual Lymph Drainage - a massage technique developed by Danish medical doctor Vodder and his wife in 1932. Vodder, who also discovered and developed a new branch of medicine called Lymphology, created this method primarily to treat patients with swollen necks or limbs due to poor lymph flow. He applied a series of particular rhythmic, light strokes along the lymphatic vessels and surrounding tissues to help the flow of lymph toward the heart thus reduce swelling in the affected area.
Myofascial Release - Adhesions and scar tissue can form in and around muscles that limit movement and function. Myofascial release involves separating the layers of tissue so that muscles slide over one another and joint movement is less restricted.
Muscle Energy Technique - a gentle, noninvasive form of therapy designed to restore optimal function to joints whose normal range of motion has been compromised by shortening and/or spasm of the musculature surrounding those joints. Assessment consists of the precise application of active isometric and isotonic contractions and muscle balancing.
Pregnancy Massage - Pregnancy is a time of great physical and emotional changes and that change can be stressful. The tension caused by stress, along with the physical changes of pregnancy, can deplete your energy for coping day-to-day. A soothing massage can help to relieve physical and emotional tension, help you sleep better and boost your energy.
TMJ (temporomandibular joint) Dysfunction
TMJ is the region where the lower jaw aligns with the skull in front of the ear. Common symptoms of dysfunction include joint noises (popping, clicking), pain in the jaw and/or neck, headaches and limited range of motion. Treatment involves determining which muscles contribute to the dysfunction, isolating each component and smoothing out the musculature with specialized techniques.
How Massage Can HelpMassage can help with many of the aches and pains you experience as your body changes during pregnancy. It can:
- Increase circulation, bringing energy-producing nutrients to your cells
- Relieve pain in your muscles and joints that must support extra weight
- Increase flexibility, making it easier for your body to adjust to additional weight
- Relieve abdominal soreness caused by an active baby's kicks
- Ease constipation, gas and heartburn as general relaxation stimulates intestinal movement
- Reduce excess fluid retention by gently pushing fluid into circulation where it can be eliminated
- Slow the progress of varicose veins as enhanced circulation lowers pressure on bulging veins
- Relieve headaches caused by tension, constipation or buildup of metabolic waste products
